Caregivers are the people that pick us up when we’re at our lowest. They are the people we turn to in a pinch and arrive at our doorstep in a heartbeat. They are the friends and family we can call at 3am when our symptoms are keeping us wide awake and we are scared. They are the ones that keep us going when we feel we can go no further.
They are also the people who, in the world of migraine and chronic illness, don’t get recognized enough. So, the next time you’re in pain and can’t find the words to truly express how thankful you are for your caregiver(s), open up this blog post and hand it to them to read. This small gesture will open a world of love in both your hearts and make healing even more hopeful.
Thank you for being by my side. Thank you for all you do — big and small.
When I am in pain, I can’t always accurately describe how grateful I am to have you in my life. When I’m not in pain, my memory often doesn’t recall all you do. But in this moment, I want you to know I recognize and appreciate you as my caregiver.
For every time you’ve picked up my prescription, driven and sat with me at doctor’s appointments, swapped out my ice pack or dimmed the lights so I could sit with you, you have given a piece of yourself to me. For this, I am immensely thankful.
Being a caregiver is not an easy job. You watch me in agony, see me through medication side effects and emotions that come and go like the tide. YOU are STRONG. Thank you for being by my side no matter what.
I also want you to know I understand caregiving often involves putting my needs before your own. This selfless act does not go unnoticed. For every action you take to make my day a little easier, I pledge to do the same for someone else when I can. You inspire me by your generous love, and I believe the best way to show you I care is to pass this overwhelming kindness along.
As I sign off on this short letter of gratitude, I want you to know that it’s ok to take a break when you need it. And, to help us find solutions to make your life and my life more beautiful. I will listen when you ask. Whether this means stepping outside to breathe the fresh air every day together or finding another caregiver to help me so you can enjoy a night out with friends, I acknowledge the time and energy you put into my health and want you to make sure you take care of yours too.
Being a caregiver is one of the most under-recognized roles a person can have, but you have taken on this job with no expectation of a return on your investment. In my eyes, you are a super star, a noble human and a person I cherish.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
