If you love a Spoonie, you may be wondering what to get for them this holiday season. It can be tough buying a gift for anyone, but Spoonies present some unique challenges.
Take me, for example: I practically live in joggers and ultra-soft tees and tunics, or leggings from LuLaRoe, that are incredibly soft. I am not joking when I say even my undies and socks and bras are ridiculously soft. This is because of widespread pain and something called allodynia, which makes me very sensitive. I’ve had to tell people not to buy me clothes because chances are I will take it back.
So, listen up! I’m about to give you some kick-ass gift ideas for the holidays that your Spoonie will love. And if you’re the Spoonie reading this, send it to your loved one! It might give them some great ideas and if you need to, highlight the ones you really want! No guess work!
For Fox Sake Mug: I was hooked when this came out on a meme and now theres t-shirts and journals and pjs. This is an adorable mug that sells on Amazon for $12.96.
Don’t Worry, Don’t Hurry Sloth Journal: Because who doesn’t love a cute sloth? And the motto is perfect for us spoonies! $5.99 on Amazon.
Two Old Goats Essential Oil Lotion: It is amazing for arthritis. It doesn’t eliminate pain but can alleviate it and I know some who find relief for their fibromyalgia. With Lavender, Chamomile, Peppermint, Rosemary, Eucalyptus and Birch Bark it smells amazing and is worth the $17.95 for 8oz.
Heated Blanket: I honestly can say I use mine year-round and I live in a state that could compete with Hell for the worst heat. I don’t lay under it, I lay over it so it’s like a huge heating pad. Mine was about $50 from Amazon but you could certainly get one for less.
Bite Me: How Lyme Disease Stole My Childhood, Made Me Crazy, and Almost Killed Me, by Amy Hilfiger & Tommy Hilfiger: She spent years not knowing what was wrong with her. Ending up in a psychiatric hospital at 18, which ended up being the best thing for her and lead to her diagnosis of Lyme disease. She shares heartbreaking and hilarious stories that moved her forward from sickness to health. $9.27 paperback on Amazon or $9.99 on Kindle.
Eye Mask by Fomi Reusable Icepack for Migraine Headache: I like it because the back Velcro’s instead of being the elastic which can make your head hurt worse. $10.99 Prime Amazon.
Ask Me About My Uterus: A Quest to Make Doctor’s Believe in Woman’s Pain by Abby Norman: Really a great read for any woman going through endometriosis and has had her pain dismissed by the doctor. $10.70 paperback through Amazon.
CVS, Walgreens, or Other Pharmacy Gift Cards: Yes, only a Spoonie would hope and dream of getting a pharmacy gift card. But it really, really helps. Many of us are on fixed incomes and disability and this helps us get what we want or need.
An Evening Out to Escape Reality: We live in a world that so many do not understand. Many of us escape here to role-play, but getting out to a movie or theatre, or concert would also be wonderful.
The Gift of Time: Quality time is a perfect gift for a Spoonie. Or go a step above and offer physical help such as to paint walls that need it, maybe cut the grass, give the house a good cleaning, or help with chores–things that the chronically ill person can’t always consistently do and keep up with. These may be things that we could really use help with, but don’t have the money to pay for and feel uncomfortable asking for.
