Hindsight is a wonderful thing, right? When I was in the midst of suffering from chronic migraines it was hard to make sense of it all, but as the pain began to disappear, I was able to reflect on how I broke free.
So today I wanted to share with you three essential aspects that helped me to become migraine-free that I wish someone had told me sooner. I hope these little gems can also help you along your own healing journey.
Trigger Foods Are Just A Very Small Part of The Picture
How many times have you been to your doctor and they’ve asked you “What are your trigger foods and do you avoid them?” Frustrating, right? Now answer this, how many time have you been to your doctor and they’ve asked you “What does your whole diet consist of?” Most likely, never.
What you eat in between these trigger foods matters. If you are eating a diet high in processed sugars, harmful fats and nutritionally void, chances are migraines will happen no matter what!
By adopting a clean, whole foods diet, high in plants, and good quality animal protein (if you so wish), you will be giving your body the best chance it can to fight off those pesky migraines through using food as medicine rather than addressing just a small part of the problem.
2. Negative Emotions Cause Physical Pain
For so long I struggled internally with negative emotions. I battled with feelings of low self-worth, guilt, shame, anger, resentment, sadness and loss. I felt like a grieving soul in a body I hated so very much.
However, when I started to work through the emotional pain and released those feelings my pain actually started to reduce. The more I found peace with myself, my illness and where I was in the present moment, as hard as it was, the more I began to heal.
An amazing resource that helped me do this was Louise Hay’s Book “You Can Heal Your Life.” I cannot recommend it highly enough.
The mind and body are completely interconnected. Heal one, heal the other.
3. Breaking Free Requires A Combination Of Approaches
As we all know, migraines are one hell of a tricky business, and for so long I searched for “the answer”. Was it a single drug, a medical treatment or a lifestyle change? Because this was my mentality for a long time, I dismissed other options, but it was only after I broke free after addressing the whole of my health, from the inside out whilst adopting several different approaches simultaneously that I found relief.
It may be a combination of introducing some new foods, creating new boundaries and repairing your gut health? Or finding out what is causing your tension, addressing this with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and introducing certain supplements?
So keep an open mind, try new approaches and find what works best for you.
Is there anything else that you have discovered on your journey and wish someone had told you sooner? I would love to know.
