Hi, I’m Jordan (or Jorie for short)! The Migraine Mantras was a thought in the back of my mind for a long time that I finally developed in the summer of June 2016. I’d come across an inspiring quote that made me rethink everything: “turn your pain into your purpose.” This was it, and MM was born.
MM started as a solo personal blog detailing my lifelong battle with chronic migraines, mental health, and other health conditions. While it still focuses on those things, it has expanded to include more stories, research, and additional tidbits with some of my migraineur friends writing with me. It has become less about ME and more about the whole picture of life with migraines, providing a spectrum of voices.
Migraine is not the only monster I fight. While I have chronic complex migraine disease (which I’ve had since childhood) as well as vestibular migraines, I also battle other comorbid health issues. These include episodic cluster headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, dysautonomia (POTS/NCS), Chiari malformation, bipolar disorder type I, and anxiety/panic disorder.
I do everything in my power to put a positive spin on all my conditions: my mantra is a variation of “everything is a blessing in disguise,” which was the inspiration behind the name “The Migraine Mantras.” The word “mantra” comes from the Sanskrit meaning “a sacred message or text.” I believe everyone has a mantra that resonates within them and can help them get through tough times.
My intention for MM is to spread awareness of migraine and headache disorders and help erase the stigma attached to migraineurs, mental illness, and other chronic and invisible illness patients with a mindful approach. I enjoy writing about my experiences as well as communicating with and advocating for those with chronic or invisible illnesses. I aim to use this platform to inspire hope, encouragement, optimism, love, mindfulness, and to provide information on research and treatments.
By day, I work (thankfully with many accommodations) as a marketing, advertising, and media professional. I also freelance write, edit, and design on the side. Writing has been my passion for as long as I could pick up a pen to do so. I am also a contributor to the Spoonie Community on Instagram as well, where I document my day-to-day life–the good and the bad—living with my health conditions. You can follow me here.
Additionally, my spiritual path has been an inspiration to me as I worked to create The Migraine Mantras. One of the central values, for me, is to highlight the beauty in the journey of living with pain, whether physical or mental. My struggles have become my foundation for strengthening my connection with my body, mind, and spirit. Meditation, mindfulness practices, and pranayama yoga are all huge coping mechanisms for me, as well as spending time in nature. Holistically, treatments like acupuncture, physical therapy, and medical massage have all given me immense relief.
Migraine has stolen many of life’s most precious moments and milestones from me, but it has given me gifts as well. Patience. Compassion. Gratitude. Things I wouldn’t have had I not gone through the pain. As they say, “you can’t have a rainbow without a little rain.”
In my low-pain, low-symptom time, I enjoy making and selling jewelry, writing, reading, art journaling, oil painting, being in nature (autumn is forever my favorite season), traveling, drinking tea, collecting things (old books, skeleton keys, and vinyl albums to name a few), and spending time with my friends and loved ones. I am a huge bibliophile—I love anything to do with words, writing, and language. As someone with an endless thirst for knowledge, I can probably be found researching a different topic every day. I also have a keen interest in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and enjoy having conversations about it—I’m an INFJ, if you’re curious.
I have called the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia home all my life and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else, despite its terrible climate impact on my pain. I currently live in the valley with my wonderful fiancé, Trey (who I get to finally call my husband in October 2018!), my mom who is one of my best friends in life, and my sweet 10 year old Jack Russell Terrier, Kenzi.
